Burst pipes and snow/ice melt can cause serious water damage to your home. With the winter weather quickly approaching, it’s important to take the necessary steps to winterize your home properly now, so you can prevent costly water damage repair later. Dave Bittle, owner of 1-800 WATER DAMAGE of Roanoke and NRV, was recently featured on Daytime Blue Ridge to give tips for doing just that.
There are a few simple things you can do to minimize your risk of experiencing water damage:
- Look around outside for exposed areas where utility lines are running in through walls. Seal off any gaps around the lines with spray foam or caulk to prevent cold air from blowing in and chilling the pipes.
- Disconnect garden hoses. Outdoor faucets are common sources of winter-related water damage.
- If you do suspect pipes of being frozen, try using hot towels or a hair dryer to warm up the pipes. Start at the valve end and work your way back.
