A little planning now means one less thing to worry about later. That starts with making sure your household knows what to do, where to go, and how to reach each other if you’re not all together when something happens. It also means having the right supplies on hand before you need them.
Build a 72-Hour Emergency Kit
A well-stocked kit can carry your household through the first three days of almost any emergency, whether that’s losing power, sheltering in place, or having to leave home with little notice. Here’s what to include:
- Food and water for at least 3 days per person
- A change of clothes for everyone in the household
- Toiletries and hand sanitizer
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Medications, including anything taken daily
- Sunscreen and insect repellent
- Glasses and contacts, plus any solution or backups needed
- Cell phone and chargers, ideally a portable battery pack too
- First aid kit
- Pet supplies, including food, water, and any medications
Once it’s put together, store the kit somewhere easy to grab, and take a few minutes twice a year to check expiration dates and swap out anything that’s outdated.
