Steps to Stop an Overflowing Toilet
- Step 1: Remove the toilet tank lid and firmly press down on the flapper (the rubber seal at the bottom of the tank) to stop additional water from flowing into the bowl.
- Step 2: Lift the float (the ball or device attached to a rod) to prevent the tank from refilling. This will allow the water level in the bowl to gradually lower. Hold the float in place for a few minutes, then gently release it.
- Step 3: If water continues to flow, locate the shutoff valve near the base of the toilet, typically on the wall or floor behind it. Turn the valve clockwise to fully stop the water supply. Remember the rule: “Righty tightens, lefty loosens!”
